Soar Magazine caught up with Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson to get his thoughts on the Ipswich game, the January transfer window and dealing with the not so Great British weather.
Teams all over the country have had their preparations hampered by the weather and whilst it’s not been an ideal week’s training for Leicester City, Nigel Pearson and his staff have made the best of it ahead of Sunday’s Championship encounter with Ipswich Town.
“It’s not been easy and today’s (Friday) been the first day that we’ve been on the grass, so we’ve been at the stadium. It’s good to get out there,” said Nigel.
“It makes it difficult with the amount of snow but you’ve just got to make sure that when you do train, the quality is right. We’ve tried to get the balance right with the amount we’ve done, but when you do go onto artificial surfaces you need to make sure you don’t do too much.”
With the transfer window open there’s already been some speculation linking the club with new signings and rumours of players leaving, but Nigel isn’t expecting much movement this month.
“I’m not looking to bring anybody in at the moment. The January window is not one that I’m particularly keen to be active in as I think you tend to pay inflated prices. There’s a lot of speculation of players coming in and out and I try to distance myself from it.
“Any players that do come in will be because we feel they can improve the squad, but apart from that I don’t really have any intentions of doing a lot of business at all, if any.”
One bit of business that Pearson has completed is the extension of Martyn Waghorn’s loan deal from Sunderland until the end of the season and the City boss has been impressed with the young striker’s impact.
“He’s already very settled here and I think he’s done really well for us. I think it’s a positive move for both ourselves and Sunderland because he’s getting first team experience and we’re getting a player who has added quite a bit of quality to the squad so I’m delighted that he’s here for the rest of the season.”
The Foxes played out a 0-0 stalemate with Ipswich at the start of the season, in what was manager Roy Keane’s third match in charge of the club. Now that the former Manchester United legend has had chance to stamp his authority on the team, Nigel is expecting a much tougher test.
“They’re a much improved side. I think they took a long time to get their first win and they had a very slow start to the season. Having said that, they’re a team that’s run into some decent form of late and I would expect it to be a tough game, but one that we’re looking forward to. Our form’s been pretty good of late so I’m sure it’ll be a tough game, but I think it’s one that both sides will think they have a chance of winning.”
Following this week’s announcement that the club are considering a future move away from their Belvoir Drive training ground to a new purpose build facility, Nigel believes any new facilities would need to be carefully considered.
“It’s not going to happen in the foreseeable future, but I think its right for the club to be looking to improve the training facility because we’ve literally got three pitches here and we need a bigger site. If we decide to move and it is possible to move then I think it’s important that we get a state of the art facility. There’s no point moving to somewhere similar, you want to move somewhere with more pitches and better facilities.
“I think it’s the way forward to make sure that we get the right facilities. It really has to be planned thoroughly and the staff here have to have a big input into what the facility is all about. The margins of success are very, very small so we need to be looking for every small edge to improve anywhere we can. That’s the idea, but until I see we are going to do it, I think at this moment in time it’s really just speculation.”
