Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders’ community programme was rewarded last weekend when four schools represented Leicester and Loughborough at the National British Basketball League Cup Final.

The schools took part in the national BBL 3 on 3 finals at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

Riders players and community coaches gave 3 on 3 coaching to year 7 and 8 pupils in seven secondary schools across Leicestershire with the winners of in-school tournaments progressing to regional finals.

These finals were held before Riders’ home game with Guildford Heat on January 9th and the winners from each category (Year 7 boys, Year 7 girls, Year 8 boys and Year 8 girls) progressed to the National finals, to represent their school at the BBL Cup Final.

The Lancaster School won the Year 8 boys final, Garendon High School reached the semi finals of the Year 7 boy’s competition and Samworth Academy entered teams into the Year 7 and 8 girls’ competitions.

Riders General Manager, Russell Levenston, was proud of each team’s success and paid tribute to the players, their parents and school staff.

“We have been working incredibly hard in the community this season, and the 3 on 3 competitions were a chance for that work to come to fruition. I know that the players and staff at participating schools all worked very hard with us in preparing for the tournament, the success was a just reward for their efforts.
