City striker Martyn Waghorn is determined to ensure that his goals and performances soften the blow of losing top scorer Matty Fryatt for two months.
Waghorn admits his strike partner’s injury has bin a major blow to the team, but also sees it as an opportunity for other players to step into the breach and stake their claim in the side.
“I think it’s in people’s minds and it’s disappointing that we’ve lost such an influential player like Matty. He’s a big player to lose and we wish him a speedy recovery.
“It’s a good chance for me and the other players to step up and score a few goals. We’ve got good cover. We’ve got Steve (Howard), we’ve got me, we’ve got Yann (Kermorgant) and other good players that can come in and his fill his shoes. It’s going to be a challenge but I’ll look forward to it when I’m in the team and I’m sure the other players will as well.”

The 20-year-old forward has played through the middle and on either flank, as part of a 4-3-3 formation, this season and is comfortable operating in both roles.
“I’m not really bothered where I play. I like playing on the wing as I like to get at players and I like playing striker because I like scoring goals. It’s a big opportunity for me now and I feel like I’ve learnt a lot over the last six months. Hopefully I can put that into a main role and push on from there.”
The ambitious young striker is eager to gain more first team experience at Leicester and is clearly enjoying his time at the club. This Saturday sees another test as Waghorn and his teammates welcome Scunthorpe United to the Walkers Stadium.
Martyn is expecting a tough game against another side fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table and sees an early goal as crucial for the confidence of the players and the supporters.
“I think Scunthorpe could have a similar sort of approach to Doncaster, but if we get the first goal we could potentially go on to get a few. Obviously as they are at the bottom of the table they could be struggling for confidence and have also lost a few players to suspension.
“If we get the first goal we might get a couple, which would be good, especially if we can get an early goal. It will ease the fans and we can relax more and play our stuff, which we’re good at. It’s a good game for us and the chance to get another three points.”
Tickets are still available for this Saturday’s contest with Scunthorpe, which is a special Leicester Mercury fixture. Visit the tickets section of City’s website for more information.
