Put a Spring in Your Step

The first signs of spring are here and people in the city are being encouraged to get outside and get active.

Health experts at NHS Leicester City recommend getting active for at 30 minutes, three times a week to help safeguard against illness and obesity.

With more than 20 parks and hundreds of open spaces to visit this spring NHS Leicester City and Leicester City Council are urging residents to put on their trainers and get walking, jogging and working out.

Carla Lane, physical activity officer at Leicester City Council, said: “Make exercise a fun family hobby. Why not take the kids or the dog out at the weekend for a long walk, and take advantage of our local parks. You could also enrol yourself in a football team or walking group. There is so much people can do to start getting more active as a family.”

Joanne Atkinson, consultant in public health at NHS Leicester City, added: “Regular exercise is proven to help prevent long term health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. People can get active right now. Our Fit and Active Families and Food and Activity Buddies groups aim to help families make healthier lifestyle choices.

“Research has found a two hour shopping spree can burn up to 420 calories, a 30 minute walk after lunch can burn 105 calories and a 30 minute game of football in the park can burn up to 630 calories.”

By building more movement into our daily lives we can all reduce stress, maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of developing health problems. For some this might mean walking the kids to school or cycling to work and for others it may be a more structured activity like a dance class or gym session.
