Steve Walsh Blog: Demolition Derby

One point out of six? We’ve been robbed this week! We should’ve beaten Coventry on Sunday and definitely deserved a draw against Reading. It’s a little blip in terms of results, but performance-wise, Leicester are still playing some cracking football.

The 2-2 draw against Cov was a classic game of two halves. City tore them to shreds in the first-half and deserved their two-goal lead, but Coventry just wanted it more after the interval and we couldn’t stop them.

For me, it’s times like that where we lack genuine leaders and characters in the side. Someone who can stand up, dish out a few a rollickings and inspire the lads to grind out a result. This Leicester City team is playing some of the best football I’ve seen at the Walkers Stadium, and possibly better than a lot of the stuff I saw and played in at Filbert Street.

The way they pass the ball around is perhaps at times better than during the Martin O’Neill era, but the current side don’t know how to grind it out like we did. I think in the future, Jack Hobbs will be that sort of character and a natural captain of the club, but at the moment, that’s something we’re lacking.

Arguably, Wayne Brown has that sort of influence on the team and he’s had a bit of a pop at the fans this week for being too quiet. I don’t think we can be too critical of the supporters as we’ve had two decent attendances for two games in the space of four days, particularly with Sunday’s match being on TV.

I can understand Browny’s frustration though. In some games the noise levels have been awesome, against Forest and Newcastle, for example and other times it’s been a little more subdued. It definitely helps when the supporters are right at it, and I think the fans will certainly have a role to play between now and the end of the season. If we make those semi-finals, I’m sure the Foxes faithful will get the hairs on the back of the players’ necks standing up!

Against Reading on Wednesday we were pretty average in the first half to say the least. Jimmy Kebe was the best player on the park, with his pace and strength and I could see him fitting into the City team quite nicely.

I think we probably missed Bruno Berner’s experience against Kebe. Even though Ryan McGivern had a decent game and did a job against Coventry, Bruno’s been on great form recently and City are definitely missing his assured touch.

I was disappointed with Reading’s first goal. Kebe had too much room to control the ball and pick his spot. It seemed as though Chris Weale made the save and then had to get up and close the ball down again because nobody else reacted. Perhaps a few of the lads were asleep and suffering a bit of a hangover from the Coventry game.

Chris Weale made a couple of top class saves against Reading and he continues to impress me. He’s one that could definitely make the step up to the Premier League. His opposite number on Wednesday, Adam Federeci, also pulled off a couple of great saves.

Lloyd Dyer’s in impressive form at the moment and his performances against Coventry and Reading are as good as I’ve seen from him in a City shirt. He seems to be a confidence player and a good run in a settled team is clearly helping him.

New loan-signing, Jay Spearing looked pretty sharp and it will be interesting to see what impact he can have on the team. If he can come in and do a similar job to Tom Cleverley last season, it could be a crucial boost to the team. Hopefully the Leicester City loan-signing injury curse won’t strike again. I’m sure Nigel Pearson has been frustrated to only see short cameos from Alex Bruce and James Vaughan so far.

In the second half Leicester had a few good chances and were the better footballing side, completely outplaying their opponents at times. Waggy took his goal nicely and from that point on it looked as though City were more likely to win. But, with one of their few break away attacks of the second half, The Royals got a penalty.

It looked pretty soft to me. From where I was sat it was difficult to tell if Solano actually caught Simon Church or not. I think in those situations, in the last minute of the game, the referee needs to be 100% sure and I don’t know how he could definitely give that.

Anyway, onwards and upwards and next up it’s Derby at Pride Park. It’s going to be a massive game and I was hopeing to be there watching from a corporate box. I had two tickets to sit in with the home fans, but didn’t really fancy that! Instead, I was going to be in a box that Tom Meighan from Kasabian booked. But, neither me or Tom are able to make the game now due to other commitments.

I’m sure I would’ve been on the end of plenty of stick from the Derby fans, but I would’ve had two fingers ready for them… to signify the brace I bagged against them at Wembley in 1994, of course! I’m was planning to take a load of signed photos of me wheeling away under the Twin Towers celebrating my winner. I’m sure the Rams fans would’ve taken a few off my hands!

Playing our local rivals could be the perfect game after a couple of disappointing results. I’m hoping for a decent atmosphere and a fast tempo, and that should suit City. A draw would be a good result, but I’m expecting the lads to attack from the start. I’d be happy with a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes, like in 1998, but I suppose that was one of those once in a lifetime results. Talk about a demolition Derby!

Robbie Savage will be pumped up for the game. He hustled and bustled at the Walkers earlier in the season, without doing that much, until the late free-kick he took. If that had gone in I would’ve lost it!

Sav has resorted to taking the free-kicks, going in goal and doing whatever he can to grab the headlines and get as much attention as possible. I heard old Pelican ‘ed did alright between the posts the other week, to be fair. He probably tipped a few over with his nose!

I’ve booked a venue for Neil Lennon’s return to Leicester, or should I say Leicestershire. Lenny’s Q & A will take place at Revolution in Loughborough on May 29th. For more information or to book tickets, email steve@legendsuk.com

This week, I’ve been adding to my media portfolio with a spot of broadcast work for local charity Vista, who provide services for blind and partially sighted people. I did an interview on my career and views on football in general, and enjoyed helping out a very worthy cause.

I missed out with my wager last time out. This week I’m backing four teams to win. I expect Manchester United, Spurs, Fulham and Reading to all nail the three points. As always, Fitzy from Turner and Kendrick will be donating a £25 bet for Wishes4Kids.
