More Glory for Blue Sox

After winning the 2009 A-division title last season, the Leicester Blue Sox became the 2010 Hearts Spring League Minors Champions in the most unlikeliest of circumstances on Sunday after defeating Enfield Sidewinders.

With a 3-0 record going into the final game and an established AA-division pedigree, the Sidewinders from Enfield were considered title favourites on the last day of the HSL at Grove Park, Hemel Hempstead.

Leicester had a 2-1 record, fielding a mixture of Blue Sox 2 rookies and established first team players.

The Sidewinders lived up to their pre-game billing and had all but crushed the Blue Sox’s hopes of a second consecutive tournament title, going ahead 15-2 by the bottom of the fifth inning.

What followed was one the greatest comebacks seen in British tournament baseball. Playing as the home team, the Blue Sox miraculously fought back to tie the game by the bottom of the last inning 16-16.

With the go-ahead runner on third, the Sidewinders pitching was under immense pressure. The next pitch was wild and a scramble for the ball at home plate ensued, but the error gave sufficient time for Blue Sox 2 newcomer Ross Connell to sprint home to score the winning run making the final score 17-16 to the Sox.

2010 looks to be an exciting season for the Leicester Blue Sox. Following on from back to back success at the National Baseball Championships and HSL, the Blue Sox will be fielding two separate teams in the BBF Midlands-AA Division for the first time in their brief but successful history.

Opening day this Sunday sees the first team travel to Milton Keynes for a tough encounter with the MK Bucks, whilst Blue Sox 2 open their account away to the Birmingham Maple Leafs.
