When You’re Smiling…

The whole world smiles with you, and Leicester City fans are grinning from ear to ear at the moment, with their team assured a play-off place and the prospect of a Wembley final and Premier League football on the horizon.

The players are buzzing too and after sealing a top six finish with Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Preston, the entire first team squad visited Kasabian’s recording studios yesterday to add their vocals to a special version of ‘When You’re Smiling’, recorded by Leicester musician Jersey Budd.

A fan’s anthem and regular feature of City games over the years, the song has also been performed by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.

Jersey and his band decided to add their slant to the song to recreate a terrace classic and support The Foxes’ play-off bid. A lifelong City fan, born and raised in Countesthorpe, Jersey and producer Gren Spencer, encouraged the players to add backing vocals to the end of track.

It was no surprise that one of the day’s more accomplished performers had Gallagher as a surname. It wasn’t Liam or Noel that provided some of the strongest backing vocals, but Foxes forward Paul, who sang with enthusiasm and later performed with Jersey at the Player of the Year Awards.

Gallagher and the likes of Richie Wellens, Steve Howard, Nicky Adams and James Vaughan couldn’t wait to get the headphones on. A few of the players were more reluctant, but cajoled by Club Ambassador Alan Birchenall, the whole squad eventually made it into the studio.

Once the music was going and after a few shaky attempts, City’s singing stars stepped up their game and, inspired by the presence of the Soccer AM and Sky Sports cameras, they started to relax and belt out the lyrics.

Jersey and the players were also joined by fanatical supporter Lee Jobber, City legend Steve Walsh and mascot Filbert Fox in their attempts to make musical harmony.

A regular visitor to the Walkers Stadium, Jersey was buzzing after recording the song with the players and is hoping that fans enjoy the final version.

“That was mint, absolute quality. It was great to see the players get involved and enjoying it so much. As a lifelong City fan, it’s the greatest honour to be asked to record this song. I hope it inspires the team and the crowd to get us back to where we belong… the Premier League!”

City centre-back Wayne Brown, enjoyed the song and Jersey’s vocal, but wasn’t too sure about the singing abilities of some of his team-mates.

“The actual song is good and the lead singer has got some voice on him, but after the lads joined in, it all went a bit Pete Tong! I’m sure it’ll be ok, though. It was a good craic, the lads all enjoyed it and all the lads were together, which was the main thing. Let’s hope it’s a success and the fans use it before the game.”

Wayne is hoping that the City fans enjoy Jersey’s version of the track and continue to sing it at home games to help generate a bouncing atmosphere in the play-offs.

“The song they sing before games at the moment is fantastic. If they could take this one on board too and get behind the lads before the game and generate a loud atmosphere, it will obviously be a bit more intimidating for our opponents and be a great bonus for us.”

Leicester City Chairman, Milan Mandaric, also backed the song and is looking forward to hearing the final recording.

“Having listened to an early version of the song, I believe that Jersey and his band have produced an anthem that will be adopted by supporters for years to come.

“I would like to congratulate Jersey and his team on something they can be very proud of and I hope that the City supporters really get behind it.”

Fans can hear the full version of ‘When You’re Smiling’ at Sunday’s final league game against Middlesbrough at the Walkers Stadium as Jersey and the players’ efforts are played before kick-off.

Years ago that was “our song”, for some reason, fans find it hard to sing. I hope this will be easy and we can really get everyone smilin`, then at Wembley…we`ll sing our hearts out
