The annual Swimathon event was held across 11 swimming pools in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland on 18th April 2010 and the distance covered by the region’s swimmers totalled 655 miles, the equivalent of swimming from Leicester to Milan in Italy!
A swimming fundraising challenge, Swimathon participants chose their distance and obtain sponsorship in aid of Marie Curie. Individual distance challenges varied between 1.5k, 2.5k and 5k and friends and family could alternatively take on the ‘Team 5k challenge’.
In total, 370 people took part, swimming an astonishing 42,180 lengths of a 25m pool.
There was an impressive turnout at Harborough Leisure Centre where 36 people took part and the fastest recorded swimmer was Russell Cheung who completed his individual 5k (200 lengths) swim in 1 hour 27 minutes and 46 seconds.
Well done to everyone that took part, the final fundraising totals should be announced in early July.
