Monarchs Ladies Seal Sixth Consecutive Victory

Leicester Monarchs ladies continue to have a stranglehold on their section of the British Club Championships after taking an amazing sixth consecutive victory at Sheffield on Saturday. After dropping just two points from their first eight rides the destination of the title was never in doubt and the match was sewn up with six races left.

Leicester notched 69 points and their 15 point margin of victory over second placed Ipswich is the largest in the competitions’ history.

Results – Michelle Whitehead 19, Lauren Davies 19, Lucy Whitehead 15, Amy Crouch 14, Chloe Whitehead 2.

The senior event was also taking place at Sheffield. The Monarchs had a couple of top riders missing but they navigated their way through a tough semi with points to spare. The final was always going to be a tough task but they finished a creditable third behind Birmingham and eventual champions, Oxford Horspath.

Results – Jason Ashford 10, Carl Jarvis 8, Leon Yelland 8, Craig Marchant 7.

Meanwhile, the men enjoyed a highly competitive meeting ridden in good spirit by two evenly matched sides in front of over 100 people.

The home side started well with a 6-4 from Carl Jarvis and Mick Skinner over Chris Jewkes and the impressive Matt Haddock. Lukas Nowacki took his first of four wins in the next and an early two point lead was established. Craig Marchant took heat three but Burns fell and was unable to complete the race, allowing Lee Aris and Tony De Leon to cruise home for a 5-4 advantage and reduce the deficit to a single point.

After a couple of drawn heats the Aces further extended their lead, Marchant finishing at the back in the sixth after a challenge on Mark Griffths went wrong and Jarvis hitting the deck in the seventh after coming off worse against Lee Aris. Nerves were then settled a little with successive 6-4’s from Nowacki/Hoyland and Whitehead/Burns to give the Monarchs a single point lead entering the interval.

The home riders seemed to wake up tactically in the second half, keeping an Aces rider in fourth place in seven of the nine races, and wrapping up the match in the penultimate heat.

Results – Leicester 91 (L Nowacki 19, C Jarvis 13, C Marchant 13, M Skinner 12+1, R Hoyland 11+1, N Whitehead 9+1, K Burns 9, A Doughty 6+1).

Combination

A combination team including Norm Venson, Charlie Cooper and Joe Kemp is always going to be a tough nut to crack but the Aces battled hard, generally for the minor positions, the Troy Allen Sam Parr pairing looking particularly impressive.
